Want to know how to spot a pro detailer in action? Count the buckets and check what’s sitting in the bottom of them. Grit guards, dirt traps, mitt slides... the simple stuff that makes a big difference.
The reality is most scratches don’t happen out on the road - they happen when you wash your car. When you wash your car dirt comes off the paint, sticks to your mitt, then ends up in your wash water. Without something to trap it, that grit goes straight back onto your mitt, and right back onto your paint.
If you’re going to do one thing to lift your car washing game, make it this:
Use two buckets - one with clean water to rinse your mitt, one with soap.
Wring your mitt out in the clean water before it goes near the soap.
Use a grit trap or mitt slide in the bottom of each bucket to keep the dirt down.
If you want to go a step further, get a separate bucket for your wheels - again, with a trap in the bottom.
