Matte paint is different. It needs to be treated differently.

That's not a marketing line — it's just chemistry and physics. The reason your matte paint or wrap looks matte is because the surface is intentionally textured at a microscopic level, causing light to scatter in multiple directions rather than reflect cleanly. That diffused light is what gives matte its unique, flat, sophisticated look.

Here's the thing: most car wash products are specifically formulated to do the opposite. They contain gloss enhancers, shine additives, and smoothing agents that are great for a glossy BMW — but on a matte surface, they slowly and silently work against you. The damage is gradual. You won't notice it at first. But over time you'll start to see a whitey, faded, uneven finish on those matte panels — and by then, it's often too late to reverse it.

Never use dishwashing liquid or general-purpose car wash on matte paint. We know it's tempting. Don't do it.

Also safe for satin paint, satin wraps, and satin PPF.

What Matte Auto Wash actually does

Autostolz Matte Auto Wash is a pH-neutral cleaning system built specifically for matte paint, matte vinyl wraps, and matte PPF (paint protection film). It uses advanced multi-surfactant technology to lift and safely remove road film, oils, bird droppings, and general contamination — without touching the surface texture that makes matte look the way it does.

There are no gloss enhancers, no shine additives, no dyes, no residue. It rinses clean and leaves your matte finish exactly as it should be — perfectly flat, perfectly matte.

High lubrication in the formula also gives your wash mitt the slip it needs to glide across the surface rather than drag, which helps reduce the micro-scratch risk that's always worth taking seriously on matte surfaces.

Works in a bucket wash, foam gun, or foam cannon.

Wash technique matters just as much as the product

Even with the right soap, how you wash a matte car matters. A few things we'd always recommend:

  • Use a soft, deep-pile wash mitt — a reef-style mitt is ideal
  • Two-bucket method with grit guards / mitt slides to keep contamination out of your wash water
  • Wash in straight lines, not circles
  • Let the soap dwell for a minute or two before rinsing — it needs time to loosen contamination
  • Dry with a deep, soft microfibre drying towel (our Performer towel is made for exactly this)
  • Only wash on cool surfaces, out of direct sunlight

One more thing worth knowing

Matte Auto Wash is safe to use on gloss surfaces too. So if your car has a combination of gloss paint and matte accents or stripes, you can wash the whole car with this — no need to split your process.

The reverse is not true. Don't use a gloss car wash on matte panels.

Complete your matte wash routine

For the best results and the lowest scratch risk, we recommend a full matte-safe approach:

🔵 Autostolz Matte Snow Foam — A matte-safe pre-wash that loosens contamination before you even touch the car. Optional, but it meaningfully reduces the chance of inflicting fine scratches during the contact wash stage.

🔵 Autostolz Matte Quick Detailer — For spot cleaning between washes. Safe to use on matte without adding shine. We genuinely recommend keeping a bottle in the car with a super-soft Pegasus cloth — if a bird gets your paint while you're out, you can deal with it safely on the spot rather than letting it sit.

(All three products are available together as a kit — ask us about the bundle.)

Directions

Shake well before use. Add 30–90ml per 17L bucket or 1L foam cannon (1–3 oz per 5-gallon bucket or standard 34oz foam cannon). Wash in straight lines using a soft wash mitt. Allow a few minutes of dwell time before rinsing. Do not allow soap to dry on the surface. Use on cool surfaces only — surface temperature should not exceed 30°C (86°F). Avoid direct sunlight. Always test on a small, inconspicuous area first. Do not allow to freeze.
